If you want to become a pet groomer, one of the best ways of doing so is to attend a pet grooming school. They’re the best way of gaining all the skills you need to get ahead, as well as valuable experience. There’s plenty of schools out there, so how do you pick the best school for you? This is what you should be looking for from the best-accredited grooming schools in your area.

Payment Plans

Grooming SchoolsAny good grooming school isn’t looking for you to drop all your money on your classes in one go. They’re actually looking to form a relationship with you and help you hone your skills. It’s more important to get you up to speed on grooming techniques than they get all their money in one go. Take a look at the payment options for the school you’re looking at, and see if they offer any payment plans. If they do, you can be assured that they care more about molding you into an excellent dog groomer than anything else. Of course, you’ll also know that you can spread your payments out, making it easier for you to achieve your goal.

First Aid Training

Pet grooming isn’t just about cleaning and grooming a pet until they’re squeaky clean. You’re going to need to know how to take care of them, should you need to. You need to be prepared for anything, so a good pet grooming school should prepare you for any eventuality. One of the most important things you’ll learn at a pet grooming school is pet first aid. You need to have a good knowledge of animal healthcare, so you can take care of a pet that needs help, should anything happen while they’re in your care. All good pet schools should offer this as part of their training.

Dedicated Tutors

Of course, one of the most important questions you should be asking is, ‘Who will be teaching me?’ Who are the tutors at the school you’re looking at? What are their qualifications? What experience do they have? And most importantly, what are they like as people? You should be able to talk to the tutors at the school you’re considering, and ask them questions about themselves and their careers. You want to see that they’re passionate about their jobs, and about bringing new groomers into the fold. If you see this, it’s a school you want to join.

The Theory/Practical Work Balance

Pet grooming schools should offer you both theory classes on the technicalities of pet grooming, and plenty of hands-on experience. The ratio of these classes differs, depending on which school you go to. The perfect ratio should be around 50/50, so you can understand exactly what you need to do to groom a pet properly, as well as the experience with real-life pets you’ll need. Don’t be afraid to ask about how much time you’ll spend in the classroom, as opposed to how much time you’ll spend with real-life animals. Will you get enough time learning how to work with animals, and enough time to gets hands-on and work on your technique?

Hours To Completion

Any good school will tell you exactly how many hours they’ll require you to put in before you complete your degree. The number of hours will vary, depending on the school itself. There’s no hard and fast rule as to how many hours you need to do to complete your degree, so it very much depends on how many hours you think you’ll need. All good schools will let you know exactly how many hours they’ll require of you before you sign up.

NDGAA Exam Prep

Finally, any reputable school should prepare you to take the National Dog Groomers Association of America exam, which will give you the relevant qualification. They should be able to tell you exactly how they’ll prepare you for the exam, and what type of exams they can put you in for. If you look for all of these things in a potential pet grooming school, you’ll be able to get a full and rounded education. Take a look around, and find a school that will prepare you for your new career.
